Welcome to our Class 2 Page!
Mrs Breedon and Mrs Clarkson are working extremely hard alongside all children to ensure that all of the superstar learners in class two make great progress in all areas of the curriculum this year.
As the final year in key stage one, year 2 is a very important year where the children consolidate and build on their skills as independent, resilient learners in preparation for their journey into key stage two.
This is the year we prepare the children to complete SATs assessments. Attached in the useful links section is a summary of what the children will be assessed against which was shared with parents at the Key Stage One SATs meeting. Through enjoyable daily reading, maths and writing lessons, children will develop and refine a broad range of skills so that they are totally prepared for each assessment and feel confident to achieve. These assessments will form part of our teacher judgement of your child’s attainment at the end of the year. You can support your child in their progress by reading at home and completing weekly homework together.
Class 2 loves to read! Your child will read and complete reading activities every day in reading sessions, Read Write Inc phonics sessions and through other subjects. We are working hard as a school to encourage children to read at least three times per week at home and record this in their reading journal. Those who do will receive a raffle ticket, have their photograph displayed on our reading celebration wall and our star reader of the week (the child who reads the most) will receive a prize, a certificate and an individual photo on our celebration wall for the week! Class 2 are currently reading James and The Giant Peach.
Maths and English
Children receive high quality maths and English teaching daily at a level which is appropriate to their needs and as part of a learning journey. Sometimes this learning is linked to our topic and at other times, it is taught discreetly to develop a particular skill. Our working walls are updated regularly so pop in and see what we have been working on this week!
This term, class 2 have been captivated by investigating Structures and Sculptures from all over the world. From towering skyscrapers to robust bridges, we have marvelled at feats of engineering and used our excellent design and technology skills and scientific understanding of materials to create our own load-bearing bridges. As Geographers, we have located structures around the world and in art, we have studied the work of Andy Goldsworthy and local artists. Now we have become historians as we delve into The Great Fire of London and discover how this affected life at the time and how it has impacted on the future. Come and see our classroom displays!
Important Dates and Information
PE – Our current PE day is Tuesday. We recommend that your child has their PE kit at school all week in order to participate in both of these sessions and that they have both an indoor and outdoor PE kit. For the remainder of the term, we will continue to swim on Wednesday mornings.
Reading Journal check – Reading journals are checked by Mrs Clarkson and Mrs Breedon every Friday. This is when we award star reader certificates, take photographs of our super readers and celebrate all of your reading efforts at home.
Homework – In a addition to reading at home, homework will be set weekly on a Friday and is to be returned to school by Wednesday the following week. Homework is to support your child to either consolidate something that they have been working on in class, as revision of prior learning or in preparation for their next steps. Your child also has login details for Times Tables Rockstars, which is a fun and interactive way for your child to practise key learning in maths. In the ‘garage’ area of the website, the times tables set are those specifically for our year group. We appreciate every effort that you make to support your child’s learning at home. As a team we can support your child to reach for the stars!
