Early Reading and Phonics at Rawmarsh Ashwood

At Rawmarsh Ashwood Primary School, we believe that learning to read is the most important thing your child will do in the early years. Reading opens the door to all other learning, so we make it our top priority.

We follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme to teach phonics (the sounds letters make). This is taught every day from Reception and continues into Year 1 and Year 2.

  • Daily Phonics: Children learn new sounds and practise reading and spelling words by blending (pushing sounds together to read) and segmenting (breaking words into sounds to spell).

  • No Missed Opportunities: Staff make the most of every chance to practise. For example, children use phonics passwords on the classroom door – they read and blend the word to get inside!

  • Support for Every Child: If a child is finding reading tricky, we give them extra practice straight away so they can keep up.

  • Working with Experts: We work with the English Hub to make sure we are always improving and giving children the best start in reading.

  • Support for Parents: We run parent stay and play sessions, share resources, and send home books matched exactly to your child’s reading level, so you can help at home.

  • Love of Stories: Alongside phonics, children enjoy listening to and talking about stories, poems, and non-fiction every day to build a love of reading and expand vocabulary.

When Miss Roper, our Headteacher, visited Year 1, the children were so proud to show her how they could blend and segment their special phonics passwords. Moments like these show how confident our pupils are becoming as readers.
