Maths in Y3

Last week, Year 3 focused on strengthening their understanding of place value, with a particular focus on addition and subtraction. To make the learning practical and engaging, the children used a range of place value counters. These hands-on resources helped them explore key concepts such as regrouping and exchanging – both essential skills for accurate calculations.

Using the counters allowed pupils to see how numbers are built and broken down, making what can be tricky, abstract ideas much easier to grasp. This practical approach gave them the confidence to work through problems and understand what happens when we regroup and exchange during addition and subtraction.

The children worked brilliantly throughout the sessions, engaging fully and making clear progress in their ability to solve problems more independently.
