At Rawmarsh Ashwood, we use Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised to teach phonics, helping children learn to read by breaking words down into sounds.
In Year 1, children begin learning new sounds and practise blending them together to read words. They also work on spelling and writing using the sounds they know. Every day, short, engaging phonics lessons help children remember and apply what they’ve learned. They read books that match the sounds taught, which boosts confidence and enjoyment, and also learn tricky words (like “the” and “said”) that cannot always be sounded out.
By Year 2, children continue to build on these skills, practising trickier sounds, spelling, and reading with increasing confidence. We are so proud of their progress and determination – it’s wonderful to see their love of reading grow every day!
At home, you can support your child by:
- Listening to them read their school book regularly.
- Practising the sounds and words sent home.
- Saying the sounds (not letter names) to help them blend into words.
Our aim is for every child to feel confident with phonics and develop a lifelong love of reading.
