The Importance of PE and Sport at Ashwood

The Importance of PE and Sport at Rawmarsh Ashwood Primary School

At Rawmarsh Ashwood Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that physical education and sport play a central role in our curriculum and wider school life. Our approach highlights the importance of PE in developing pupils’ physical health, character, resilience, and cultural capital.

High-quality PE provision helps our pupils to:

  • Develop physical confidence, strength, and coordination
  • Build teamwork, resilience, and respect
  • Experience a broad and balanced range of sports and physical activities
  • Understand how an active lifestyle supports their physical and mental wellbeing

Enrichment Through Community and Professional Sports Partnerships

To enrich our curriculum and inspire our pupils, we have built strong partnerships with local and professional sports organisations:

  • Doncaster Knights provide the school with 50 free tickets for selected fixtures, giving families the chance to experience elite-level rugby together and encouraging pupils to engage with the sport beyond school
  • Sheffield Steelers offer reduced ticket rates for key matches, enabling children to enjoy exciting live ice hockey events with their families
  • Our collaboration with Sheffield Steeldogs has opened up further opportunities for pupils to explore different sports and be inspired by live competition

Active Participation Beyond the Classroom

Our pupils have taken part in sports sessions delivered by Rotherham Community Sports at Parkgate Astro. These sessions provide high-quality coaching in a professional sports environment, allowing children to develop their skills, confidence, and teamwork. Being active in such a setting encourages pupils to see sport as something to enjoy and aspire to beyond school hours.

Encouraging Families to Engage

We actively encourage parents and carers to attend live sporting events with their children, creating shared, positive experiences that build aspiration, strengthen community ties, and inspire a lifelong love of sport.

By working in partnership with local and professional sports teams, we help our pupils to see sport in action – promoting ambition, celebrating teamwork, and developing a healthy, active lifestyle.
