Our Year 1 mathematicians have been busy exploring mass and weight this week through hands-on learning with balance scales.
To support their understanding, the class uses the “I Do, We Do, You Do” approach. This method gradually builds independence, helping pupils feel confident while learning each new skill. Miss Roper, our Headteacher, visited Y1 to see their learning in action. The children also showed how they use a phonics password to enter the classroom, demonstrating how every moment is used as a learning opportunity.
How they learn:
- The teacher begins by modelling how to use the balance scale, placing an object on one side and adding cubes to the other until the scale balances. While doing this, the teacher explains their thinking so the children can follow the process.
- Next, the class works together to solve similar problems. Pupils help count cubes and predict whether more or fewer are needed to balance the scale, building their confidence and mathematical vocabulary through guided practice.
- Finally, the children apply their learning independently. Working in pairs, they choose classroom objects such as gluesticks or scissors and use cubes to measure and compare weight on their own.
